A.M.

CD 12 was opened this morning.  The morning was largely occupied by clearing and checking the master grid points shot by Sonia Rohter (CD 11) yesterday.  After a line was shot, the trench was triangulated, raked clear, and bounded by string.  A dirt dump was established down the slope to the east.  Opening elevations for CD 12 (and Locus 1 ) were:

NW  244.9 E/29.1 S  23 cm BD       26.77m ae

N     246.9E/ 29.25S 46.5 cm BD    26.535m ae

NE  248.8 E/ 29.4 S  100 cm BD   26m ae

E    248.7 E/ 31.4 S  116.5 cm BD   25.84m ae

SE 248.6 E/ 33.4 S  127 cm BD     25.73m ae

S    246.6E/ 33.25S  105 cm BD     25.95m ae

SW  244.6 E/ 33.1 S  72.5 cm BD   26.265m ae

W    244.75 E/ 31.1S  49 cm BD     26.51m ae

Center  246.8E/ 31.2 S 86.5 cm BD  26.135m ae

A datum point was established in the tree on the south baulk.

Opening photographs of the trench were taken, despite difficulties due to its size.  Before picking began, it was decided that the rocks in the northen end of the trench -- part of the topographic feature which the pathlike feature (most of CD12) appears ro interrupt -- would be their own locus ( Locus 2 ), because it is expected that they will persist through the topsoil.  Coordinates for Locus 1 and Locus 2 will be:

Locus 1 (topsoil):

244.9 E/ 29.1 S        23 cm BD        26.77m ae

245.9 E/ 29.2 S       29 cm BD         26.71m ae

246.85 E/ 30.4 S       75.5 cm BD     26.245m ae

248.7 E/ 31.4 S        116 cm BD      25.84m ae

248.7 E/ 33.4 S         127 cm BD     25.73m ae

244.6 E/ 33.1 S         72.5 cm BD    26.265m ae

Locus 2 (Rocks)

245.9 E/ 29.2 S          29 cm BD     26.71m ae

248.8 E/ 29.4 S         100 cm BD    26m ae

248.7 E/ 31.4 S         116 cm BD     25.84m ae

246.85 E/ 30.4 S          75.5 cm BD  26.245m ae

A deep pick pass was taken throughout Locus 1 and sorted.  The pick pass revealed intensely rocky soil and patches of root rot. Locus 1 yielded 1 bowl of highly worn tile and 18 sherds of pottery -- including 1 base, 1 tondo, 5 rims, and 4 handles -- today, a surprisingly amount for an hour of sorting in topsoil.

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
