Daily Log

Morning

We work in AG-X BB 1-2 and in agger 11 proper digging along east-west trench for a profile drawing including the fossa in quadrants F-D 9-15 for a narrower trench in F-E.

In AG-X we dig slowly reaching only mid 2, since we encounter an unusually high concentration of carbonized seeds (#s 1 and 2) as well as other carbonized material (# 3).  This swath of cut 5 is only ca. 70cm wide, conforming to the dark burn soil which lies alongside the remaining section of the rock-fall/packing lifted long ago ( see sketch # 1 p. 4 ) and now extends to mid 0 ( see sketch # 6 p. 8 ).  Pottery is frequent and includes a good deal of heavy coarseware and of bucchero (note # 5 in particular) in addition to the dominatny and sometimes good impasto.  We find 2 pieces of bronze and several pieces of bone, also a little tile (including # 4) and plaster in large chunks.

In AG 11 we remove dumped earth and a tile dump then dig the topsoil away to a depth of ca. 40cm, finding a little pottery (ca. one-eighth carton).

In the last bit of our cut in AG-X we find burn intensified to black below and thinned to yellow, nearly empty soil above with the former rising.

Editorial Note

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
