AM

Work began with a pick pass, moving from the NW to SE away from the border of the mottled, Locus 11 soil and to the exposed, heavily carbonized soil.  The carbon-rich burnt soil, although it initially sloped down steeply, sems to be levelling off toward the iddle of the trench.  The soil of Locus 11 remains heavily mottled and claylike and contains a fair amount of tile and ceramics and high quantity of carbon.  Soil is sorted directly in the trench.  During this pick pass, two sherds of fluted bucchero (Find #1), a stamped impasto lid (Find #2), and a possible piece of antler (Find #3) were recovered.

Another pick pass was made of Locus 11 , this time in the eastern meters in order to bring the elevation of the eastern portion of the trench down to the same level as the western meters, in order to begin looking for the burn layer (heavily carbonized, dark gray layer) there.  Soil in the east is still mottled, although not as heavily as the western meters, and seems to contain less material as well; this difference though does not seem drastic enough to constitute its own locus.  Soil is still sorted directly in the trench.  A possible bucchero strut (Find #4) was found in this pick pass.

Once the pick pass was sorted and cleared, it was decided to trowel in the southern portion of the trench, where there seems to be a number of tile fragments and pithoi sherds.

Work began this afternoon with a pick pass of the remaining Locus 11 , mottled soil; approximately half of the original locus soil has been removed to expose the burn layer.  Soil is still mottled and claylike, containing lots of carbon, as well as ceramics and tile.  Soil is sorted directly in the trench.
