Daily Log

June 22, 1987

Two hours were spent clearing the floor around the unfired covertiles and to the the west in T-25. Here in T-25 the area bordering T-26 was covered with protective plastic.

Work continued afterwards clearing down I-L/95 so as to take a fresh section. Shale like ‘galestra’ was again encountered at about 10 cm. below the surface, particularly in I aqnf J. No material came out of this stratum. More in K and L the soil at this level was grey and crumbly as was the soil above it. Very little material came from this layer eithe buty a couple of worn pieces of terracotta were found.

At about 40 cm in I-J/95 below the ‘galestra’ was what appeared to be the beginning of a soil change to a lighter colored and textured soil that apparently had distintigrated plaster in it. Only one piece of bone came from here so far.

In KL/85-86 the topsoil cut was continued with small(1/3) cassetta) amounts of worn tile and plaster found. Very few fragments of

mixed pottery were also found. In 86 and 87 it became evident that the plaster soil dump found in a mound in 88-90 extended out this far west on the surface and into the topsoil.

More work was done cleaning the floor. The soil over the unfired tiles was begun to be lifted.
