Civitate B12

The small cross trench was taken down 0.25m to the north side and  0.35m on the south to either bedrock or shaly, yellowish soil.  It was found that the stones were mixed with the bedrock in no discernible pattern other than a slight curve.

Civitate B13

The 1.50m wide cut at the east end of the trench was taken down 0.25m, and showed that the stones were isolated rocks, not part of a wall.

Civitate B14 (see sketch )

On the other side of the hill of Civitate B, opposite Poggio U20, a trench 0.60 X 17.50m was laid out on the same E-W axis as the other trenches.  The trench was excavated down 0.25-0.30m to shaly, yellowish soil.  7.50m from the east end of the trench a concentration of stones (2.0m wide) was found with several small pieces of tile and several vase fragments.  A trench on either side of these rocks was begun to examine their extent and nature.  The trench (B14A) on the north was 1.0 x 2.0m long; the trench (B14B) on the south side was 3.0 X 6.50m.  The rocks seemed to continue both north and south.  From their irregular, somewhat loosely bonded nature, it would seem possible that they formed part of a

terrace wall near the edge of the hill.  More vase sherds were found among the rocks, including about 3 handles, a bottom of bowl, small fragments of fine impasto ware, etc.  One animal bone was also discovered.

Editorial Note

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
