Photographs taken

Began troweling in meters 46-45, to define around the stones and determine the extent of the concentration.  The cut is about 125cm deep, and the soil is dark brown with large inclusions of carbon.  Little tile and less than 15 small fragments of pottery and bone were removed.  A ridged impasto rim fragment (#3) was found in this area.

In meter I/42-43 work defining the stone and plaster concentration began.  This area is approximately 115-120cm deep with dark brown soil with very frequent inclusions of carbon.  1/2 cassetta of small tile and plaster fragments, and 1/2 late box of pottery and bone were excavated.  A shaft of a bronze tack (#1) and a ridged impasto rim (#4) were found.

Baulk cleaning in I/48-43 produced 1/4 cassetta of tile and plaster, 3/4 latte of pottery and bone, and 1 small fragment of pithos.  A coarse were log handle was found (#2). * The baulk in H/44-43 was also straightened, producing less then 10 pieces of pottery and bone and G small fragments of tile.

*Note: Another river stone - possible sling stone - was found in baulk clearning from  I/45.

Work continued in meters I/42-43 in the stone concentration.  Stones were defined and left in place.  The soil throughout this area was dark brown with inclusions of carbon.  Traces of a heavy layer of carbon were picked up as well.  1/8 of a lattee of pottery and bone, and 15-20 small fragments of plaster were removed.  A fragment of incised bucchero (find #5) and the head of a bronze tack (#7) were found in this area.

In meters H-I/46-45 a cut was contined at a depth of approximately 130cm, since it has been noted that the stone concentration in H-I/46 did not continue to the west any farther.  The soil in this cut was dark brown with carbon inclusions, and a heavy layer of carbon was picked up as well.  2 2/3 latte boxes of pottery and bone, and 1/10 cassetta of tile were removed.   A triple rope bucchero handle (#6) and a rochetto (#8) were found during excavation.
