Pottery: 7

The tile concentration about the stone packing in M,N,O-77-79 continued to be cleaned down with hammer and mestaline.  Large amounts of plaster-like material continues to be found above the tile.  The tiles continue to be exposed at 85-90 cm.

A cut just above the black layer at c. 70 cm in T-65 and at c. 90 cm in R-65 was continued through R,S,T-65,66 and continued eastward through R,S,T-70.  The cut to the black layer is c. 10 cm in depth.  In S-67 at c. 80 cm it appeared that the orange/pink floor material reappeared, though it was not hard but was soft, almost like plaster.  The cut continued to be made above the black soil or above the plaster-like material.  As the cut reached meter R-70 the hard terracotta/mortar floor was again encountered at c. 75-80 cm.  Directly above this was the dark black soil.  Above the dark black soil was yellow-grey soil.  The floor continued to be exposed towards the east through meters

R,S-71-73 at c. 70 cm.  Meters T-71-73 and the southern half of meters S-71-73 were left at the c. 50 cm level.  This area contains unfired cover tiles just under the 50 cm level and will be attacked with hammers and mestaline later.  A large flat stone, apparently incorporated into the terracotta/mortar floor, was discovered in meter S-72/73.  This stone was expected to be found and is in direct line with the stones in P-80, Q-77, R-74,75, etc.

The area in R-74 at c. 40-45 cm which was excavated with dental picks was re-photographed this morning.  The area was then picked to the floor level and the soil carefully searched for ivory.  (See MT VII p. 22 for photo).

The bulk between U,V,W-67 and U,V,W-68 was taken down, fully exposing the column base in U,V-67/68 and the surrounding terracotta/mortar floor.  The three pan tiles stacked upon one another were also more clearly exposed, though they are still partially hidden by the large stump in W-68. (see MT VI p 109 ).

The large stump in W-68 was removed, thus exposing the three pan tiles upon one another.  It appears that for at least one tile there is a complete length and width preserved.

The tile layer in M,N,O-77-79 at c. 85-90 cm was cleaned down more, exposing more of the tiles just above the stone packing.

The cut to c. 70 cm, "floor" level was continued to the east through meters R-72,73 and through the northern half of S-72,73.  The tree and stump in S-73 was removed.  The soil just above the floor in T,S-73 was very red, perhaps containing a great deal of plaster.  A pan tile, with its flanges oriented down on top of the floor, was

uncovered in R-73, and it extends into (beneath) the bulk between R,S,T-73 and R,S,T-74.  Other tiles above this were unfortunately removed with the pick.

The bulk between U,V,W-70 and U,V,W-71 was taken down to c. 10 cm above the floor.  It was not taken to floor level
