Work continued with mestaline and dental picks to uncvoer the stratum ca. 90cm below surface in LM/78-81.  Because numerous pieces of ivory were found on Saturday, in L/81, the earth in L/80 was carefully removed and sifted in hopes of finding both more ivory and its relative position in situ.  Very little was recovered, however, with the exception of a disc fragment.  Ivory was also found in M/79, but not complete examples.  In the vicinity were large pieces of burnt wood, bronze flakes, bone and burned bucchero fragments.

Pottery finds were confined to 1/10 of a box redware and impasto fragments, aside from the burned bucchero.  Only 1/2 cassetta of tilea nd 1/4 cassetta of plaster were recovered, inlcuding ones with straight edges and reed marks.  One strange-looking flange, with a fingerprint on its interior, was found in the tile box and kept.  It may b e sima but it appears too thin.

P.M.

Work continued in LM/78-81 following the morning schedule.  Areas L/80 and M/79-L/79 were excavated with dental picks because of the morning's ivory finds.  But very little ivory was discovered.  Aside from several broken pieces of possible ivory inlay in L/80, only flakes of light blue ivory was found in LM/79.  Other finds were also limited - a few bronze flakes (M/79)-6 in total,  a piece of worked bone, 1-2 cassetta of tile and plaster, and practically no pottery.  Two large pieces of plaster, however, were recovered, one with 2 reed marks and 2 finished edges.

Work in MNO/72-77 continued and the third cut was completed.  Finds were minimal, both in terms of tile and pottery.
