The western half of the northern meter was picked and shoveled. Soil was sorted at the wheelbarrow. Another pick pass was done in this part of the trench, tile, and pottery was recovered. The soil has been coming up with tiny (2-3 cm) pockets of decayed rocks. The soil also seems to be darker now. The area was scraped to reveal any change clearer. There appears to be the flakey yellow-white soil on the northern part of the pass. While the darker brown soil is in the southern portion. The trench was scraped from the north to the south in order to give a clear picture of this western half of the trench. A pick pass was done in the eastern of the 50-51 S meter to expose either the darker brown soil or the flakey yellow soil. It seems that the soil here also splits between a northern flakey part and a southern darker soil. The rest of the trench was scraped. While cleaning the trench it was noticed that the rock on the northern baulk wall was loose. It was removed and the pillar of dirt was taken down to the floor of the trench. These finds were counted as baulk trim. The trench was cleaned and roots clipped for closing elevations and photos.

Because of the depth of the trench, workers are using CB 55's northern half of the trench to enter in and out. It was noticed that a rocchetto was on the baulk wall, in order to preserve the rocchetto, the baulk was trimmed and it was removed (SF #1).

The white flakey soil along the northern baulk will be left undeclared and excavated until more of it has been exposed since it appears to slope down under locus 6. Locus 6 is a darker brown soil cover ¾ of the trench. It has tile and pottery included in it along with patches of decayed rocks in it. Since we are looking for a more subtle soil changes we will revert to picking soil and then sorting by hand in the trench and then be dumped

into wheelbarrows. The northern meter of locus 6 was picked (50-51 S). Soil was sorted by hand and dumped. The next meter (51-52 S) was picked and sorted. Tile and pottery was found.

PM

A pick pass was done in the southern most meter of locus 6 . While picking a disconcerting piece of terracotta was found (SF #2). Soil was sorted into buckets and dumped. Picking started again in the northern part of locus 6 , patches of flakey yellow soil were found on the boarder of the locus. Tile and pottery were recovered, more 8-10 cm sized rocks seem to have been turned up in the pick pass. The pottery and tile still appears to be worn.
