IV. Daily Log

A.M./P.M.     5 July 2016

Excavations continued in locus 5 .  A pick-pass was carried out in the southwest quadrant of the locus, then stones were defined. Locus 5 was closed. Approximately 6 fragments of terracotta were recovered.  Twelve sherds of pottery were found along with one piece of bone.  A fragment of a possible ridge pole tile was made a special find.  Closing photo and elevations were taken.

Closing co-ordinate elevations for locus 5 :

NW(80-E/43-S): 26.10 m. above absolute elevation (53 cm. below datum point)

NE(84-E/43-S): 26.17 m. above absolute elevation (46 cm. below datum point)

SE(84-E/47-S): 25.85 m. above absolute elevation (78 cm. below datum point)

SW(80-E/47-S): 25.82 m. above absolute elevation (81 cm. below datum point)

The southern portion of the trench was declared locus 6 .  Photos and opening elevations were taken.  The soil is olive-brown in color

and more clay-like then locus 5 .

Opening co-ordinate elevations for locus 6 :

NW(80-E/44.7-S): 25.96 m. above absolute elevation (67 cm. below datum point)

NE(84-E/44.7-S): 26.11 m. above absolute elevation (52 cm. below datum point)

SE(84-E/47-S): 25.85 m. above absolute elevation (78 cm. below datum point)

SW(80-E/47-S): 25.82 m. above absolute elevation (81 cm. below datum point)

A pick-pass was carried out throughout the locus except where there were significant concentrations of stone.

Special Finds:

#1. Locus 5 81.0-E/45.8-S 25.85 m. above absolute elevation (78 cm. below datum point) Ridge pole tile fragments

#2. Locus 6 82.5-E/46.4-S 25.82 m. above absolute elevation (81 cm. below datum point) Iron slag

#3. Locus 6 83.7-E/46.1-S 25.97 m. above absolute elevation (76 cm. below datum point) Coarse ware sherd with iron slag

Another, but shallower, pick-pass was carried out in the western sector of the locus.  Approximately a dozen small well-worn terracotta fragments was recovered.  Approximately 1/3 latte-box of pottery sherds was found along with one piece of bone and a fragment of tooth.  Two special finds were made.

NW(80-E/44.7-S): 25.85 m. above absolute elevation (78 cm. below datum point)

NE(84-E/44.7-S): 25.93 m. above absolute elevation (70 cm. below datum point)

SE(84-E/47-S): 25.84 m. above absolute elevation (79 cm. below datum point)

SW(80-E/47-S): 25.80 m. above absolute elevation (83 cm. below datum point)
