July 30, 2003
Today will be the final day of work in T 32 for the 2003 season. Baulk walls are being trimmed back and straightened. Photographs wil be taken before back filling tomorrow.
I have ended excavation in T 32 for the 2003 season, but the trench will need to be reopened and finished next year. I am in the middle of locus 7, which is defined as the Orientalizing burn layer. The soil is characterized by small bits of orange-yellowish crushed plaster throughout and much terracotta and burnt material. There is a small pocket in the SE corner with a high concentration of carbon, far denser than the rest of the trench layer. THe natural part of the soil is dark brown in color. Stratigraphyically this layer appears as a band of black soil (best seen in trench T 26) but cannot be seen definitively yet in T 32 as I hav3e not excavated enough of this layer.
Material yield in this layer has been fairly high with very much pottery and terracotta and special finds varying from metal, terracotta, pottery, bone, antler, slag.
Locus 7 is definitely still open. I have excavated ca. 14-20 cm.s into the burn layer, and there is no sign of a new soil emerging yet.
The main feature of the soil in this locus is the amount of carbon. There is currently a fair amount of terracotta in the trench floor and the SE corner has been left rough with a concentration of tile jutting out from the corner to ca. 18-20cm.s above the trench floor.
Closing elevations for the T 32 trench for 2003 are as follows (Not closing elevations for locus 7):

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.
The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
