7 July 2015

AM

The morning commenced using hand picks to break up the soil in the southernmost meter and the northeast corner in order to level out the trench and to expose any more rocks that may be in those areas. The soil is still somewhat clay-like though the color in becoming more light brown; however, that may be due to the fact that the trench is in direct sunlight for most of the day. Soil was then hand sorted into buckets using trowels.

Small concentrations of terra cotta and pottery have been found north of the rock feature, with only a few small fragments recovered south of the rock feature.

During clearing a fragment of medieval pottery was recovered.

Find #1 : Medieval pottery

Elevation: 26.45 m AE

Coordinates: 103.06E/43.93S

Locus 2

Work has moved to the northern half of the trench to focus on leveling the trench floor and to further define the rock feature. Additionally, work in the northern half will focus on defining the stump in the northeastern corner so that it may potentially be removed later in the day.

Small concentrations of terra cotta and pottery continue to be found. It should be noted that little to no pottery, terra cotta, or bone is being recovered south of the rock feature.

Once the stump in the northeast was sufficiently defined, part of it was removed. After the loose soil was cleared roots were clipped until lunch.

PM

The afternoon began with hand picking the northwest area of the trench in order to level that area to match the level of the rest of the trench. The soil is starting to become darker and much more clay-like compared to the light brown gritty soil.

An increased amount of pottery has been found in the northwestern part of the trench. An increased amount of fist-sized rocks has also been found in that portion of the trench as well.

At the end of the day, roots were clipped and closing elevation were taken.
