Daily Log

June 23, 1998 AM

Because of the extensive bedrock outsropping in the northern part of the CA42N trench it was decided to concentrate on the south-east corner, meters N10-11 W11. The area was designated locus 2. The level of the trench in those meters was dropped 10 cm. Material coming out was different from the previous day, the fragments being larger and less worn, concentrated mostly in central east portion of the locus 2. A total of 6 redware, 6 impasto and 1 cream ware fragments were excavated as well as 16 very small, 1-3cm, pieces of tile. In addition a bone fragments and a piece of vitrified terracotta(tile?) were found. Soil color in locus 2 is olive brown (2.5Y 4/4). The less fragmentary and worn state of recovered material may indicate that was occuring as the primary deposition and not a washout from the area of higher elevation.

In CA42 excavation of the well area continued. Approximately 1m squared area in south-west croner of the trench was closed off since the soil there became exceedingly hard to excavate. All excavating at this point is done with small picks.

In CA42N continued excavating in locus 2. Soil was still olive brown but numerous white calcium inclusions started to appear as well as rocks, indicative of proximity of sterile soil. Material recovered today included 5 pieces of tile, 9 red ware fragments, and 2 coarse ware fragments.

In CA42 work continued excavating locus 21. Several more stones of the well wall were cleaned and defined. A small piece of charcoal(carbon) was found between the rocks at the dpeth of approximately 170cm. b.d. Final depth reached today was approximately 180cm b.d.

Editorial Note

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
