This area was excavated from topsoil and revealed several linear stone formations which are not yet fully understood.  The pottery from this area was distributed relatively evenly.  However, the condition of the pottery varied.  In topsoil the pieces were heavily abraded and difficult to clean with dry brushing alone.  Beneath the topsoil the fragments tended to be of similar size, usually 7cm or less in their largest dimesion.  Most fragments had well defined edges, so that joins were recognizable.  Still, it was rarely the case that joins

were found.  The coarseware fragemtns varied in size only in the area of the stone formations (65-80 cm).  here several large pithos fragments were recovered, while others which were exposed remain in the trench.

Little bucchero and other fineware was recovered in comparison to other areas under excavation this year, most notably T22 W extension; and also in comparison to previous excavation in T21 (see Albertson I and Lacy and Lyons I).

While this area was under excavation, baulk trim was completed after every cut.  Baulk trim finds were never unusual in comparison to what was found during regular excavation.  Nor did baulk trim recover any unusual diagnostic pieces.  Thus, baulk trim is incorporated into the percentages above.

This area was intended as a sounding outside the wall of the south building.  While some pottery was recovered from G-I 40, most was recovered from plaster fall from the east wall of the building in G-I 38-39.  Impasto and coarseware make up most of the pottery finds from this area.  However, the recovery of eight fragments of a trefoil-lipped oinochoe in Itao-Corinthian ware is significant.

A fenestrated vessel fragment was found among the coarseware fragments.  Of the few sherds of bucchero, none was diagnostic.

Fourteen one litre latte cartons of reed impressed plaster with

other significant features and finished edges were saved from G-I 38-40 and brought into the magazzino for future study.

The pottery from this area was generally less than 7cm in its largest dimesion and had relatively unabraded edges.

This area, as was discovered once excavation commenced, was possibly an area of fill from the upper building excavations.  In general the pottery from this area was abraded somewhat.  Less of it was recovered than from other areas of T 21.

The entire length of the east baulk from A 41 - O 41 was trimmed, and the washout removed, at the beginning of this season.  The most interesting find was a ridged spindle whorl.

Baulk trim consisted mostly of washout near the floor of the trench and trimming back the baulk in other areas.  No special finds associated with this baulk trim.
