Daily Log 8/7/14

The floor of the trench is too wet to excavate due to overnight rains. We started to trim the southern baulk wall and define the roots and rocks there. Due to the lack of material being found and the high number of rocks present in locus 3 we spent the morning defining the rocks there while we waited for locus 2 to dry out enough to excavate.

More rocks are becoming revealed in locus 3 during the defining. The floor of locus 3 was leveled and the roots removed. The baulks around locus 3 were trimmed. The soil has become dried out enough in locus 2 to start excavating there. A pick pass was thrown in the eastern meter of locus 2 . Soil was sorted and pottery and bone was recovered. Several large rocks were hit during the pass. While sorting more pottery was recovered than tile. While sieving a bucket a tibia bone was recovered (SF #1).

While completing a pick pass in the eastern meter of locus 2 , a shotgun shell was recovered under a root near the southern eastern corner. It appears that the shell was kicked in from the edge of the trench since the shell was fairly clean, we will continue to excavate locus 2 in the previous described manner picking and sorting by hand with every 4 th bucket being sieved. A pocket of light grey soil appeared in the north-east corner of locus 2. Another pocket of light grey soil was found in the middle of the trench towards the north (north-west corner of locus 2 ). While sorting through locus 2 , rocks were being defined and the surface was being leveled in the eastern part of locus 3. The western half meter was picked with hand picks due to the amount of rocks.
