Daily Log

June 23, 2004

We first evened out the raised areas within the trench and trimmed baulk walls.  We made a pick-pass from east to west.  A patch of rocks has appeared running diagonally from the 145 E / 60 S meter mark to the 144 E / 59 S meter mark, from south to north.  Larger pieces of tile also appeared in this area; we trowelled around them.  We performed a second shallow pick-pass from the east end to the rock patch, approximately to the 145 E line, then used trowels in the rockier area.

The rock patch was further defined; it spreads across the trench from the southwest corner in all directions.  We levelled the floor with the pickaxe and trowels and trimmed the baulk walls.  Flecks of carbon appeared around the center of the trench, near the stump along the 60 S line, but not in a highly concentrated amount.  The dirt remains a lighter brown color with frequent patches of galestra-like soil throughout.  We are collecting larger

fragments of pottery and terracotta tile than in previous loci.  Large pieces of tile have also surfaced within the rock patch and throughout the western half of the trench, but have yet to be defined.  In total there was 3/4 cassetta of bulk terracotta, 24 pieces of pottery, and one piece of bone, a tooth similar to the tooth found on Tuesday.

Closing elevations:

  • NE corner: 111.5 cm b.d.
  • SE corner: 116.0 cm b.d.
  • SW corner: 119.5 cm b.d.
  • NW corner: 115.0 cm b.d.
  • Center: 116.0 cm b.d.

We remain in Locus 3 as we continue to sift through the galestra-like soil.

There was one find today.
