Continued 10cm topsoil cut in CA42N extended meters N14-15 W8-9.  As the trench floor was cleared a line of 6 large (approximately 20-30 cm across) fairly flat stones was revealed in N13-14 W9, situated close to the baulk and corresponding to the lense of dark soil in the east baulk of the trench(see drawing on page 60 ).  At this point it was decided to extend the trench south into N12 W9, most of which is occupied by a large stump in southeast corner.  As the top soil cut was extended into N12 W9 two more stones were uncovered.  The entire stone formation seems to have roughly a shape of elongated diamond with four stones placed in a square in the middle and two rocks in a row on each side of the square.  The formation is approximately 2m in length and is oriented approximately on south-north axis.  Stone formation was designated locus 8.  A drawing of the formation was made and pthotos and slides taken.

Material recovered from locus 7 today included 90 tile pieces (1-8cm), a piece of iron (possibly modern), 3 bone fragments, 2 cream ware, 7 coarseware, 1 bucchero, 9 impasto and 15 redware fragments.  Also a piece of iron possibly modern was found.

Editorial Note

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
