AM

Began excavation with a pick pass from the eastern wall towards the stone feature. In a second pick pass, dirt was picked from the stone feature back to the western baulk wall. Soil contains roots at the eastern baulk wall and flecks of charcoal are noticed mid trench. Soil is noticeably lighter in color mid trench towards the western baulk wall, becoming white and chalky. Considering these soil changes and stone features, Loci 10 , 11 , and 12 are declared.

Locus 10 is defined by white, chalky soil. It extends from the western baulk wall to mid trench before the stone feature. It contains few materials.

Locus 11 contains the stone feature. Soil is light brown and contains tile and pottery.

Locus 12 extends from the eastern baulk wall to the beginning of the stone feature. Soil is dark brown and contains roots close to the baulk wall.

Opening photos are taken and elevations are recorded.

After the Loci 10 , 11 , and 12 were declared, pick passes began in Locus 10 to lower the extension floor to match the level of VT-7. Pottery and tile are found along with a few pieces of bone. The soil is dark brown in the northeastern corner of the locus. The southwestern corner

is dominated by soil that is granular, yellow, and very crumbly. It is akin to the soil in Locus 3 . This chalky white soil at the very southwestern corner was found with patches of the Locus 3 soil type. The soil has charcoal inclusions. Baulk walling was completed to clean the extension and clarify stratigraphy.
