daily log

21 July 2015

AM

The morning began with a pick pass across the entirety of Locus 5 in order to lower the level of the locus. The soil remains yellowish-brown and clay-like, and retains moisture well. However, due to direct sunlight throughout the morning it becomes baked and dries out very easily. Soil was then shoveled into buckets and sorted into wheelbarrows.

During clearing a fragment of ridged pottery was recovered.

Locus 5

After the soil was cleared it was decided to use hand picks and trowels to clean up the baulk walls and to level out the floor of the trench in order to better define the rocks that appear to be running northeast across the

eastern half of the trench, which extend from T-76 to the south. Additionally, leveling with also focus on exposing the more yellowish, rocky soil that has begun appearing throughout the trench.

Thus far, small concentrations of terra cotta, pottery, and bone have been recovered from the locus; however, the amount of noticeably less than it was at higher elevations. During trimming of the baulk wall a rocchetto fragment was recovered.

Work continued on removing the southern baulk of Locus 5 , with small concentrations of terra cotta, pottery, and bone being recovered from those areas.

Roots were clipped until lunch.
