Daily Log

July 11, 2003

A.M.

Began the day with pick passes in remianing dirt of the 2nd cut of locus 2.  Cleared up to the stump and sifted with trowels into buckets.

In the east corner of the trench a new soil is emerging.  A galestra-like soil is appearing near to the stump and higher in the east end than in the rest of the trench.  The trench floor will be scraped and cleaned to expose this new soil.

The two large rocks on the SW corner came loose and were contained entirely in locus 2.  We cleaned around them.

The trench was scraped and the galestra like layer was found throughout the trench.  This will be the end of locus 2 (topsoil).

Locus 2: Open from 7/10/03-7/11/03

Locus 2 consisted entirely of topsoil and did not contain very much material.  Many roots were present.

The morning ended by trimming baulk walls and cleaning the trench to prepare to open locus 3.

P.M.

I will open locus 3 now, which is the galestra-like layer.  This layer exists here possibly because of a redeposition in antiquity, reason unknown.  Opening elevations for locus 3 are as follows:

E167/S58.5                                   27.68

E168.5/S58.5                                27.68

We began a cut into locus 3 starting at the west end of the trench, moving east.  Many pick passes were made to get thru this area.
