The rest of the brown earth layer was removed.  At this point, traces of a layer of yellowish earth was encountered.  Large flat stones, first noticed the day before, became more prominent.

The yellowish earth was then removed from around the stones.

The earth was removed from the stones which were found to extend all along the trench and which are probably bedrock.  The yellow earth was found only in pockets around the stones and did not extend throughout the trench as a stratum ( see diagram, p. 6 ).

One box of tiles and one box of pottery was the total accumulation of this first trench.  The pottery was generally coarse with only an occasional sherd of finer impasto or bucchero ware.

After the bedrock was cleaned, photographs were taken and profiles were drawn.  The trench was then extended two meters to the east towards the eastern wall of the upper building.  The area covered by this new extension covers Grids 1D-F and 2D-F.

At this point, only the stony soil stratum was removed.  Excavation was stopped within 20 cm of the wall so that the wall could be approached with more care.  There were no finds in the stony soil stratum.  As before, only occasional bits of weathered rough pottery and tile were found.

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
