E-F/23-24: ab. 1 box of tiles, 1/4 box coarseware, a few bucchero pieces, and Italo-Corinthian ware.

The area to be excavated (designated T-18) lies to the north of the north wall and immediately to the east of the area excavated by Erik Nielsen in 1970 ( see EN I ).  Following and continuing his grid system, the actual area comprises grids A-J/23-34, which is a rectangular strip 12 x 9 m in line with the north wall.  Grids A-D/23-24 along the wall have been previously dug ( TG II ) to a depth of 30-40 cm.

In the remaining north part of the area, the topsoil (ca. 10-15 cm)

was removed at the end of last year's excavation.

The area T-18 was measured out anew stating from a pichetto by the north wall, 22 m from the NW corner of the building (pichetto marked by green color on the grid plan).

Work started in the SW part of the area, in grids EF/23-24 and EF/25-26, moving from south towards north.  Here a hard earth-stone till was removed to a depth of ca. 35 cm (exclud. removed topsoil).  The same level was reached as that previously attained outside the north wall in T-18.  Earth light brown, very dry, heavily mixed with small stones; interspersed fragments of regolae, small stones.

Small quantities of pottery, coarse and fineware (some bucchero, a few

frags of Italo-Corinthian).

Work continuedn orthwards (grids G/23-25) in the west part of tr. T18, to the west of a sun...

Shelter put up in E-H/25.

Small stones not so concentrated here, the hard earth-stone till seems to be sloping down northwards here to reach a lower level than southwards.  Some quantity of tiles and pottery.
