Work began by removing soil from beneath the stump in the NE corner of the trench and then by removing parts of the stump itself, as the floor of the trench is too wet to excavate due to rain the previous night. Axes and pick axes were used to remove the stump and trowels used to remove and clean up all dirt loosened while removing the stump. While cleaning up loose soil, a bronze sheet fragment (Find #1) was found. The stump was removed and once this was done, loose soil and wood chips were scraped up from the floor of the trench using trowels and soil was sorted directly into buckets by hand. Once this was done, baulk walls were trimmed for the remainder of the morning. While trimming baulk walls, a large fragment of iron slag (Find #2) was found in the northern baulk wall. Soil was hand-sorted directly in the trench into buckets.

Baulk walls continued to be trimmed at the start of the afternoon. While cleaning the southern baulk wall, a piece of vitrified terracotta (Find #3) was found.

Once the baulk walls were trimmed, a pick pass was begun in the northern half of the trench and moving south. Soil is a medium to dark yellowish brown color and claylike in texture, and is starting to appear slightly mottled, with some charcoal in the western meters of the trench. Soil is hand sorted directly into buckets in the trench and 1 in 3 buckets are dry sieved. During this pick pass, an iron fragment (Find #4) was recovered. Slag and bronze were bulk found.

Work ended early due to rain.
