Placed stakes and string around the trench. Took opening elevations at the corners and center of the trench using a datum point located on a tree west of the trench (the absolute elevation has not yet been determined).
Opening elevations / Locus 1:
- NE corner: 71 cm b.d.*
- SE corner: 87 cm b.d.
- SW corner: 82 cm b.d.
- NW corner: 74 cm b.d.
- Center: 74 cm b.d.
*Due to the location of the tree, we measured the NE corner 28 cm south of the 148 E / 58 S point because the datum point string did not reach past the tree in a straight line.
We took the first pick-pass west from the 148 W line and left about 25-30 cm of land bordering T-21, which we will remove after two or three more pick-passes. Yellowish clay emerged under the humus layer in the NW corner and grey clay appeared at the same level, under the humus, at the center of the trench. A white organic substance, termed "root rot," has been uncovered throughout the trench.
The rest of the soil at this level is brown topsoil. This level has been designated as Locus 1.
We completed a second pick-pass and worked to level out the elevation throughout the trench.
- NE corner: 84.5 cm b.d.
- SE corner: 94 cm b.d.
- SW corner: 84 cm b.d.
- NW corner: 80 cm b.d.
- Center: 87 cm b.d.
We had one cassetta of bulk terracotta and 6 pieces of pottery. We sifted by hand and are using only buckets, not a wheelbarrow, to dump dirt due to the lack of tools on the site. There was one find today.

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.
The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
