Daily Log 28/7/10
The Trench was scraped down to redefine the soil that was obscured by the rain yesterday afternoon. We are still trying to reveal the chaulky white soil under the medium brown soil. Since more of the galestra like chaulky soil was exposed in the eastern part of the trench, we moved west into the area of the rock feature.* (for star see previous day entry) Our excavations in the east have shown that the rough circular feature does not extend to the east and that the sketch made on pg 67 shows the extent of the rocks. The rocks are in a rough circle ~ 1.5m in diameter. The rocks are ranging in size from 10 cm to 40 cm, and there is 1 large rock roughly 70 cm x 40 cm. These rocks will be lifted when loose and desposed of in the old trench, CA 62. A pick pass was done in through the rocks to loosen soil and rocks. The soil is baked out but is the same as locus 2 that was excavated yesterday. The soil in meter 7E to 8E that is still locus 2 was picked and sorted into buckets. While sorting an incised rim was found (special find #1).
#1 Incised rim
7.73 E, 2.95 N
In the rock feature several large rocks were removed, a few rocks were found under the first layer of rocks. Little material was found in between the rocks. A few worn pieces of tile and 1 piece of pottery was found in the rock feature. Another pick pass was done, 2 rocks that appeared to be smaller are now proving to be almost as large as the large rock mentioned early (~70 cm x 30 cm). These rocks line up with the 1 st large rock at 2.5 N. In the are of locus 2 between 7E and 8E and 3N and 4N has yet to yeild any of the new chaulky soil. We continue to trowel and sort dirt into buckets. A possible coil made handle (S.F. #2), incised pottery (S.F. #3), possible incised pottery (S.F. #4) and an incised piece of pottery (S.F. #5) were found in this area.
#2 Coil Made Handle
7.67 E, 3.64 N
#3 Incised Pottery
7.63 E, 3.30 N
#4 Possible Incised Pottery Fragment
7.67 E, 3.49 N
#5 Incised Pottery
7.20 E, 3.15 N
While cleaning up the rock features patches of galestra were found at a similar height to the galestra in the eastern half of the trench. A piece of iron sheet (S.F. #6) and a large courseware lug (S.F. #7) were also recovered on the edges of the rock feature.
#6 Iron Sheet
5..35 E, 1.40 N
#7 Large Courseware handle
6.77 E, 1.80 N
In the area of the rock feature another pick pass was done to level the galestra like soil. Several rocks appear to be in a yellow galestra like soil. These will be left in the soil until the new soil is exposed. While cleaning up 4 little rivulets (S.F. #8) were found.
#8 Metal rivulets
6.03 E, 1.51 N
Another pick pass was done in the northern part of locus 2, between 7E and 8E. More tile and pottery and bone was recovered from that area. Still no white chaulky soil Several large roots from stump D were removed, under the soil of one of these roots a large (20 cm x 20 cm) rock was uncovered, but still is firmly inbeded in the soil. The soil is still a medium brown w/ carbon inclusions and is much lower than the rest of the trench. The slope moving up to the roots of stump D was picked to bring down that area of the trench. An unusual piece of terracotta was uncovered (S.F. #9).
Supplementary Find #10
Rim w/ Incisions
#9 Unusual Terracotta
6.85 E, 2.80 N
The are of the rock feature, (5E, 1N – 7E, 2.5 N) was scraped down to expose the yellow soil under and among the rocks. No material was found except a worn piece of terracotta. Another pick pass was done to level the northern part of meter 7E to 8E, lots of pottery was found along with tiles and bone.
1 bowl tile
1 ½ latte pottery
¼ latte bone
4 pieces slag
