July 23, 2001
After close inspeciton, the area noted as bedrock on July 18 appeared to not be so. The reain caused soil pockets between the rocks to become more evident. Excavation resumed in the area and it was decided that is was in fack a rock packing level and not bedrock. Digging was difficult as the rocks were packed quite tightly and appear to have been stuffed in place with a thick red clay soil. The rocks ranged in size from approximately 10-25cm. I believe we have come near the bottom as a rochetotto fragment and a couple pieces of pottery were found after the last pass. The presence of material is poromising in the the packing will soon end and an informative and productive level may lie beneath it, Locus 5.
In T9(2) work resumed with the pick axe moving still through topsoil. However, the area began to become quite productive by mid morning. Five finds were pulled from the area: incised handle, worked antler, ridged pottery and two pieces of what may be scuptural terracotta. 13 1/4 latte boxes of tile fragments and plaster were also removed. The presence of reed impressed plaster is still high in frequency, but it may be related to the upper building collapse. A profile of a cover tile was also left in situ.
20cm x 15cm of the tile survives, so it is a fairlysubstantial fragment. The vicinity of the tile will be tracked tomorrow to see if a tile spread is present.
