Began by troweling down into locus 20 in order to fully reveal the layer of rocks in order to remove them.  The soil is a medium brown with little amounts of tile, pottery, and bone.  While troweling in locus 20 , a new soil, medium brown with inclusions of white and orange flecks was revealed.  Therefore, it was decided to scrape the surface of to fully reveal the extent of the new soil.  The new medium brown soil with inclusions of white and orange matter along with carbon was revealed in the south western section of locus 20 only.  It was decided to close locus 20 and open locus 21 and locus 22 .  Photos were taken of locus 20 .

Closing elevations and coordinates:

  • 139.95mE/22.44mS - 28.56m
  • 140.82mE/22.81mS - 28.55m
  • 140.35mE/24mS - 28.55m
  • 139.10mE/24mS - 28.51m
  • 139.07mE/24.36mS - 28.51m
  • 138.82mE/24.34mS - 28.50m
  • 138.87mE/23.56mS - 28.48m
  • 139.30mE/23.59mS - 28.55m

Locus 21 consists of the medium brown soil with inclusions of white and orange matter along with carbon.  Opening photos of Locus 21 were taken.

Opening elevations and coordinates:

  • 138.97mE/23.56mS - 28.55m
  • 139.20mE/23.59mS - 28.55m
  • 139.10mE/24mS - 28.51m
  • 139.15mE/24.06mS - 28.55m
  • 139.07mE/24.36mS - 28.51m
  • 138.82mE/24.34mS - 28.50m

Began to trowel locus 21 in order to determine the extent of the new soil.  The remainder of former locus 20 was opened as locus 22 and remained the same medium brown soil with tile pottery and bone.

Opening photos taken.

Opening elevations and coordinates:

  • 139.53mE/22.44mS - 28.56m
  • 140.82mE/22.81mS - 28.55m
  • 140.35mE/24mS - 28.55m
  • 139.10mE/24mS - 28.51m
  • 139.30mE/23.59mS - 28.55m

Began troweling in locus 22 in order to determine the extent of the medium brown soil.  Also, we further defined and removed rocks where possible.

PM

Continued to trowel through loci 21 and 22 . In locus 22 we continued to find medium brown soil.  While troweling in locus 21 , a reddish deposit similar to that found in loci 9 and 16 was revealed.  Continued to trowel down in locus 21 in order to reveal its full extent.

While troweling in locus 21 , it was noticed that north of the reddish deposit the soil contained a slightly increased amount of carbon and small pieces of bucchero/buccheroid are being found.  There has been a slightly greater frequency of tile being excavated in locus 22 during troweling.

Continued to trowel down into locus 22 and the soil along with the material found continues to be consistant.  The soil remains a medium brown.  The reddish soil deposit in locus 21 was fully revealed with  the northwestern edge creating a corner with the reddish soil prevously excavated in South Flank 1.  The reddish deposit of locus 21 then continues south through the previously excavated areas of SF-2 and appears to either end at or go into the orientalizing wall.
