Daily Log 30/7/15

Excavation began this morning in Loci 10 and 12 . The soil in Locus 10 and Locus 12 is very dark brown, loose, and containing large concentrations of charcoal. As both areas are close to a potential floor surface, adjacent in VT-7 (Locus 13), we are excavating down to the equivalent elevation. As this is progressing, large amounts of ceramic have been recovered.

Find #1:

Locus 12

Creamware base, with slip?

305.808 m A.E.

-4.978 m N/-9.667 m E

Once excavation had brought Locus 10 and Locus 12 to a potential floor level, work began excavating the soil around, and between the rock feature in Locus 11 . In Locus 10 , the dark brown soil rested on a yellow soil in the south of the locus. This area abuts a similar yellow-brown soil that is Locus 3 . Consequently Locus 10 slopes from south down to the north.

Excavation in Locus 11 is recovering tile and pottery. The stones are being defined.

Find #2:

Locus 11

Tile with a dental

306.092 m A.E.

4.53 m S/11.94 m W

Find #3:

Locus 11

Iron fragment

305.859 m A.E.

4.593 m S/11.404 m W

Find #4:

Locus 11

Bucchero pot

306.293 m A.E.

5.883 m S/11.417 m W

Excavation this afternoon has concentrated in Locus 11 . The stones have developed into a roughly ovoid feature with three courses. The feature butts Loci 10 , 12 , and 4 . Consequently excavation of the north of Locus 4 occurred to reveal the ovoid feature.

The feature is roughly a meter in diameter. Tile, pottery, and bone were recovered from Locus 11 .

Trench of VT-8 Extension

The feature itself appears to have been constructed into what appears to be virgin soil, and bedrock. The three layers of coursing are in total approx. 50 cm from the top to the bottom potential floor level in Locus 12 .

The latter part of the afternoon was spent defining the feature with trowels and mini picks.

Closing Totals:

Locus 4 :

1 Bowl of Tile and Plaster

11 Sherds of Pottery

2 Pieces of Bone

Locus 10 :

2 Bowls of Tile and Plaster

77 Sherds of Pottery

Locus 11 :

9 Bowls of Tile and Plaster

234 Sherds of Pottery

21 Pieces of Bone

Locus 12 :

3 Bowls of Tile and Plaster

57 Sherds of Pottery

3 Pieces of Bone
