Daily Log

June 17, 2004

Pickaxed the top third of the trench. Still mostly roots and terracotta mixed in with the brownish-grey dirt of Locus 2. One strange piece of ceramic/terracotta popped ip and was made a special find (Find 1). Another strange piece od terracotta was also made a find (Find 2). There is an apparent change in the soil near the root- the soil appears lighter and somewhat more graniular and rocky. We decided to finish a pass of the trench to determine whether or not it was root rot effecting the color of the soil. Plaster has begun to be found in the trench in medium to large chunks. Another strange piece of terracotta was uncovered and made a find (Find 3). More plaster is starting to appear in the southern 1/3 of the trench. The rocks which were in the middle of the trench were removed since they were sitting on the second locus. Pottery is begining to be found with increaced frequency.

Picked through the south easten corner of the trench to complete a pass for the day. An unusual piece of terracotta was discovered with possible reed impressions and made a find (Find 4). Also a possible statue fragment was discovered in this pass and made a find (Find 5). Closing elevations were taken.
