Daily Log

July 6, 2004

We began the morning by preparing the extension area (brushing and defining the rocks) for another picutre of the rock patch.  We also took a picture of Locus 5, which was opened on Monday in the original trench.

The rest of the morning was spent in the extension area.  The majority of the rocks in the center of the extension area were removed.  Two complete pick-passes were made.

We continued sifting from the morning's second pick-pass and worked on baulk walls.  A third pick-pass was then made in which a new locus was designated, Locus 4 Extension, because there was a lighter brown, finer soil present.  This Locus 4 extension differs from Locus 4 of the original trench in that there is more plaster and other materials, and it does not have the fine, sandy consistency or light brown color of Locus 4 (main trench).

We finished the day by levelling with a pickaxe and trimming the baulk walls with a pickaxe.

Closing elevations for Locus 4 Extension:

  • NW corner: 136.0 cm b.d.
  • SE corner: 35.0 cm b.d.
  • SW corner 133.0 cm b.d.
  • Center: 133.5 cm b.d.

The day ended with 1 cassetta of  bulk terracotta, 32 pieces of pottery, 4 pieces of bone, and 6 pieces of plaster for Locus 3.  For Locus 4 Extension, there were 1/2 cassetta of bulk terracotta, 1 bone (tooth), and 12 pieces of pottery.  Bulk trim yielded 1 1/2 cassetta of bulk terracotta, 10 pieces of pottery, 4 pieces of plaster, abnd 7 pieces of bone.

There was one find.

  • 143.77 E / 59.07 S
  • 130.0 cm b.d.

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
