Daily Log 9/7/14

9/7/14

AM

The day began with a pick pass of the eastern meter of locus 2 . Another pocket of light grey soil was found in the south east corner under a root. The soil is a little dry and crumbles nicely. The soil is being sorted into buckets with every fourth bucket being sieved. A diagnostic bone was found in the first meter of locus 2 (SF #1).

It was decided to explore the vertical extent of locus 2 in a more concentrated area. Therefore we will do a sounding in the eastern

most meter of the trench. The sounding will be one by two meters and will be declared locus 4. Closing elevations were taken for locus 2 and opening photos, opening elevations, a sketch were done for locus 4 .

Work in locus 4 began with a pick pass of the entire locus. The soil is similar to locus 2 but is sprinkled with more light grey soil and is more dry. We continue to sort dirt by hand into buckets, sieving every fourth bucket. As we got a bit lower the soil became more moist. Roots and rocks were defined with hand picks and trowels, and large roots were removed with hand axes. The soil became lighter towards the north. A second pick pass was done throughout locus 4 , which revealed more flakey grey soil in the northern end of the sounding. During the pick pass, further large roots were trimmed using the pick axe. In the northern half of locus 4 , two more large

pieces of bone were recovered (special finds 4 and 5) where appear to be a leg bone and knucklebone respectively.

Another pick pass was done in locus 4 . The soil is becoming more flakey with this pass. Several roots were cut out. The floor of the trench was scraped. While scraping the floor near the center of the locus, what appears to be a sheepÂ’s leg bone was uncovered (SF #6). At the same time we began trimming the baulk walls of locus 4 .

After throwing another pick pass, the soil is becoming much flakier throughout the rest of the trench. We are anticipating the end of our current locus to be near. While clearing the loose dirt from the locus, we came across a small knuckle bone (SF #7) and what appears to be a claw (SF #8) inside the dirt.
