Monday June 25

The 1x2 area where the tile fall is apparent as well as the 1.25 x 1.25m in the NW of the trench with the rock feature (wall spillover) were roped off; the second section of the trench (rock feature) will be left as is for the time being.

Since the southern area of teh trench was not worked on last week, twe focused our attention there this morning. Pickpasses made across the southern meters of the trench (below thge rock feature and tile dump areas). Again we reincountered leaves under the soil while picking, and so it is assumed that most of the trench has dirt dump material from the 1960's/70's excavation of the archaic building. Continued to pick and removed various fragments of bone, ceramic

and terracotta. On one pass an unusual plaster fragment was recovered and made a find (Find 1). Continued to pick across the entirety of the trench. The soil continues to be the flakey, mottled soil of the dirt dump (Locus 1) with rocks and roots intermixed. Pieces of ceramic - a bucchero sherd with incised lines and an unusual ridged piece were also recovered and made finds (Find 2 and Find 3). Worked on baulks and continued to clear down the dirt dump soil before lunch.
