Cleaned wood debris from axing stump. Dirt cleaned from below stump using pick axe and area beneath part of the stump removed yesterday leveled. Pottery and terra cotta recovered in small concentrations. One bucket sieved, no artifacts recovered. Another shallow pick pass completed beneath the stump, soil remains consistent with Locus 2 , sorted and cleaned from the trench. Simultaneously, hand pick used to drop the elevation in the easternmost meter by two meters to define the rocks. Small concentrations of terra cotta recovered. Small sections of the stump removed in order to facilitate access for axing. In east, rocks continue to appear as definition is being done. The feature follows a roughly linear alignment from the southeast sloping uphill and diagonally
to the northwest. One bucket sieved, no artifacts recovered. During cleaning, a body fragment of molded pottery recovered.
Find 1: Molded Pottery Body Fragment
One half of the stump in the northwestern baulk wall removed. The two easternmost meters by two meters level with rocks defined, so baulk walling commenced in that area while axe used to work towards removing the last section of the large stump.
Wood debris cleaned from the trench. Leveling and defining continued from the eastern two meters into the western two. The light brown-yellowish soil is being revealed in all areas beneath Locus 2 . Terra cotta, pottery, and
bone found in small concentrations. A diagnostic scapula fragment recovered.20140021
Find 2: Scapula Fragment
During leveling in the western meter, a fragment of slag recovered, collected as a bulk find. Below the area in which the tree stump was removed in the second meter from the west there is a large fragment of rock, currently revealed to a length of 50cm, which is deteriorating and fragmentary, maybe bedrock. Baulk walling commenced in the western two meters. Terra cotta and pottery found in small concentrations, as well as one fragment of slag, collected as a bulk find. Eastern half of the trench scraped down, revealing that many of the rocks there are included within the layer which may be deteriorating bedrock.
During leveling in the western meter, a small fragment of glazed Medieval pottery recovered.
Find 3: Glazed Medieval Pottery Body Fragment
One bucket sieved, a fragment of vitrified terra cotta recovered.
