Daily Log 12/7/11
A pick pass was done in the rest of locus 1 , the 1 x 2.5m section along the western baulk. Soil was sorted into buckets, terracotta and pottery was found. One of the larger rocks was dislodged during picking and removed. Part of one stump was also picked and removed. A light pick pass was done in the eastern most meter to remove the thin layer of locus 1 here. Soil was sorted into buckets, the clay-like soil under locus 1 was finally uncovered. The trench floor was scraped to expose the new soil. Baulk walls were trimmed, but since only one locus is open currently all finds will be counted with locus 1 bulk finds. Closing elevations for locus 1 were taken, these will be the same as locus 2's opening elevations. While scraping the trench more of the small stones were found impacted into the surface of the new clay-like soil, but still there is no discernible formation or pattern in them. Opening photos of locus 2 were taken.

Locus 2 is an olive brown soil, with roots and small stones. There is little terracotta coming up with a pick pass. Some root rot is present. The soil is clay-like in texture. A pick pass was done in the eastern meter of the trench. The soil is breaking up easier now. Around 88.5S a concentration of rocks was hit. These will be cleaned with trowels to expose their full extent. Soil was sorted intro buckets and dumped. Another meter wide pick pass was done, more root, root rot and terracotta was found between 36W and 37W.
Another pick pass was done between 37W and 38W. Terracotta and pottery was found, soil was sorted into buckets and dumped. The soil is still the same olive clay-like soil of
Locus 2 . The last 2 western meters of the trench were picked. Roots and sections of stumps were clipped out. Soil was sorted into buckets and dumped. The roots of several stumps were defined and removed. The last large rock that was present in locus 1 was finally removed after being defined.
