A.M.                                                                                           24 July 2009

The western sector of locus 5 that is separated from the eastern sector by a saddle of galestra was declared locus 7 this morning. Co-ordinates were set out and measured. Photos were taken and a soil sample for Munsell color was collected.

Co-ordinates of locus 7 (opening):

NW (47.4-S/177.1-E) = 160 cm. beow datum point, 26.70 m. above absolute elevation

NE (47.9-S/178.1-E) = 173 cm. beow datum point, 26.57 m. above absolute elevation

SE (48.4-S/178.0-E) = 167 cm. beow datum point, 26.63 m. above absolute elevation

SW (48.2-S/176.9-E) = 161 cm. beow datum point, 26.69 m. above absolute elevation

The soil of this locus is similar to that of locus 5. It is brown and includes orange, white and carbon inclusions. The excavation of this locus was started this morning and ended. At least one bowl of terracotta fragments was recovered. Sixteen sherds of pottery were found along with five fragments of bone.

In locus 5 three sherds of pottery were found while a soil sample was being collected.

Closing photos and depth measurements were taken of locus 7.

Special Finds:

  • 20090238
    20090238
  • Find #1
  • Approx. 47.8-S/177.2-E
  • Approx. 26.60 m. above absolute elevation
  • Locus 7
  • Bucchero rim sherd with rolled stamped design
  • Find #2
  • 48.1-S/178.0-S
  • 26.52 m. above absolute elevation
  • Locus 7
  • Handle fragment with black slip

Closing co-ordinates of locus 7:

NW (47.4-S/177.1-E) = 160 cm. below datum point, 26.70 m. above absolute elevation

NE (47.9-S/178.1-E) = 184 cm. below datum point, 26.46 m. above absolute elevation

SE (48.4-S/178.0-E) = 185 cm. below datum point, 26.45 m. above absolute elevation

SW (48.2-S/176.9-E) = 182 cm. below datum point, 26.48 m. above absolute elevation

Closing photos and depth measurements were taken of locus 6.

Closing co-ordinates of locus 6:

NW (49.3-S/176.7-E) = 152 cm. below datum point, 26.78 m. above absolute elevation

NE (49.3-S/178.5-E) = 157 cm. below datum point, 26.73 m. above absolute elevation

SE (52.2-S/178.5-E) = 156 cm. below datum point, 26.74 m. above absolute elevation

SW (52.2-S/176.2-E) = 152 cm. below datum point, 26.78 m. above absolute elevation

High point in center = 151 cm. below datum point, 26.79 m. above absolute elevation

Low point in center = 165 cm. below datum point, 26.65 m. above absolute elevation

Closing photos and depth measurements were taken of locus 5. Since this locus sloped downward forming a ditch or depression the opening and closing measurements are the same for the perimeter co-ordinates. However, the center of the locus has been lowered.

Low point in center = 181 cm. below datum point, 26.49 m. above absolute elevation

High point in center = 150 cm. below datum point, 26.80 m. above absolute elevation

The ditch or depression in this trench excavated as locus 5 and 7 still has soil in the bottom containing terracotta and stones. Most of the large stones in these loci have been left in situ.

Photos were taken of what remains of locus 4.

Editorial Note

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
