Tuesday June 21, 2005

The day began with the retaking of photos since the first photos of Locus 3 of the original trench turned out poorly due to bad lighting conditions.

Nest a trowel pass of Locus 4 was taken.  During the trowel pass, an unusually shaped flat circular terracotta disc (?) was found.

It should be noted that plaster finds have increased in frequency as we have continued work in the northern extension.  Therefore we have decided to count the plaster separately.  We continued to both pick and trowel to expose the next soil level.

and to define the rocks.

The closing elevations for locus 4 were as follows:

NW     34 cm b.d.     25.89 m absolute elevation

NE     43 cm b.d.     25.8 m absolute elevation

SW     [87 cm b.d.]*     22.36 m absolute elevation

SE     97 cm b.d.     22.26 m absolute elevation

center     62.5 cm b.d.     25.605 m absolute elevation

*  The southwest corner consists of a large dip surrounded by tree roots and alrge rocks form the wall and therefore has remained stable during excavation.  Rock is directly on the surface in this area.

The soil of this locus was mainly decayed plant matter and roots.  It was dark brown in color and contained many thin/fine roots and some small rock fragments.

In the afternoon we worked on the baulk walls.  Work also continued defining the rocks of the wall.  The dig director confirmed that the top of the wall has been exposed.

Final leveling and clearing of the trench commenced in preparation for photos and

and closing elevations.  The rench will then be closed and will later be drawn by the architect.
