It was decided that a sounding would be made

against the north balk wall, encompassing 42-44-E/53

-54-S.  This area was declared locus 7.  Photos were

taken and opening co-ordinate depths measured.

Opening co-ordinates of locus 7:

NW (42-E/53-S):  142 cm. below datum point = 25.03 m. above

absolute elevation.

NE (44-E/53-S):  143 cm. below datum point = 25.02 m. above

absolute elevation.

SE (44-E/54-S):  146 cm. below datum point = 24.99 m. above

absolute elevation. SW (42-E/54-S):  138 cm. below datum point = 25.07 m. above

absolute elevation.

A pick-pass was carried out across the entire

locus, which was lowered approximately 60 cm.  The

excavation of this locus was ended when the bottom

turned up a compact lalyer containing stones upon

which was resting an overturned fragment of an unworn

frieze plaque (S.F.#4).

Special Finds:

1.  Locus 7 43.5-E/53.8-S 24.95 m. above absolute elevation Bronze flake

2.  Locus 7 42-44-E/53-54-S Approx. 24.38 m. above absolute elevation Sherd with ridge

Special Finds (cont.):

3.  Locus 7 42-44-E/53-54-S Approx. 24.32 m. above absolute elevation Odd terracotta fragment

Special Finds (cont.):

4.  Locus 7 43.15-E/53.43-S 24.30 m. above absolute elevation Banquet Frieze Plaque fragment

The soil of this locus is similar to locus 6 and 5.  It is yellowish brown in color with numerous pieces of decaying limestone pieces.  There are also numerous small orange bits.  Approximately 5 bowls of terracotta fragments were recovered.  Approximately 1 1/2 latte boxes of pottery sherds were found. Approximately 2 dozen pieces of bone and teeth were found.  One piece of bronze was made a bulk find. There were 4 special finds.  Locus 7 and 6 were closed.

Closing co-ordinates of locus 7:

NW (42-E/53-S):  219 cm. below datum point = 24.26 m.

above absolute elevation.

NE (44-E/53-S):  214 cm. below datum point = 24.31 m.

above absolute elevation.

SE (44-E/54-S):  214 cm. below datum point = 24.31 m.

above absolute elevation.

SW (42-E/54-S):  218 cm. below datum point = 24.27 m.

above absolute elevation.

Closing co-ordinates of locus 6:

NW (44-E/53-S):  214 cm. below datum point = 24.31 m.

above absolute elevation.

NE (46-E/53-S):  211 cm. below datum point = 24.34 m.

above absolute elevation.

SE (46-E/54-S):  215 cm. below datum point = 24.30 m.

above absolute elevation.

SW (44-E/54-S):  214 cm. below datum point = 24.31 m.

above absolute elevation.

The northern balk wall of the trench was

trimmed.  Approximately 4 dozen small fragments of

terracotta were recovered.  Four sherds of pottery
