The morning began by handpicking in the southern portion of the trench in order to uncover the extent of the rock feature. It appears that the rock feature does extend south after clearing dirt with trowels and brushes. Handpicks and trowels were also used in the northern portion of the trench to determine the extent of the rock feature. Elevations for the northern portion are below that of the rest of the rock packing and the northern section appears not to contain a defined rock feature. Materials such as terracotta and pottery are still being uncovered. Trowels are being used to continue peeling back the layers of soil to assure that the rock packing does not extend north.
After further excavation of the northern meter a continuation of a rock packing was uncovered. Revealing rocks in the northern section of the trench has exposed a rock feature throughout the entire trench.
Locus 3 was declared, as the entire floor of the trench is a rock packing.
Opening photos and elevations were taken.
Excavation began in locus 3 by using a handpick to extract rocks in the center portion of the trench from west to east. The foal is to attempt to make the trench level while pulling back the rock packing.
Afternoon began with the continuation of rock removal from the center portion of the trench from west to east. After consultation the decision was made to halt the removal of the rock packing. CB-49 was laid out to determine the extent of a potential fossa after a rock feature was found in CB-45 and CB-46. The feature was determined to not be a fossa. To gain a clearer picture of what the rock feature may be, an extension will be dropped from the east wall that measures 1m X 3m. the extension will also aid in determining the extent of the rock feature.
A tape measure was used, with a plumb bob to lay out the extension for CB-49. The eastern wall was extended 1 meter to meet CB-46. Opening photos and elevations were taken for locus 4. It should be noted that locus 3 remains open.
Locus 4 Opening Elevations:
Locus 2 Pottery: 1/2 Latte
Locus 3 Pottery: 1/2 Latte
Locus 2 Terracotta: 1/2 Bowl
Locus 3 Terracotta: 1/2 Bowl
