Diagram of trench

Tuesday- 24 July 1984

Morning:

Tile: 5

Pottery: 5

Work continued in MNO lowering hte trench to floor level (ca. 60-65 cm).  Statue fragments, sima and ridge pole were found immediately right above the heavy plaster layer.  A great deal of tile was found above it also in N/84-85 a concentration of tile with "rabbit" heads (including one attached) and a great deal of plaster was found.  Photos were taken during the sequence of excavation.  One of the heads (w/ attachment) is facing head down (nose pointing to the floor but vertically oriented).  The other is facing down but resting on soil at more of an angle.  Both do not lie directly on the floor.  While cleaning down for photos what appears to be another complete head and a fragment were found lying a few centimeters to the north of the two other heads.  The third head was lying face down as was the fragment.  All were at roughly the same level (ca 5-10 cm over the floor) and in a heavy tile and plaster concentration.  In the meters to the north on the MN/84-85 line a line of vertically oriented pan tiles run E-W.  Right at MN/84-85 at about 40 cm fright in and around these vertical tiles several small pieces of ivory and bronze and burnt wood were found.  Once again a great deal of plaster, mostly disintigrated and two small chunks was found.  Of three boxes of pottery some was burned but not much and it was representational.  Three cassette of tile were dumped and the rest saved to check for joins.

with sima and head fragments.

In XY/73 the floor was uncovered until the farthest east of the unfired covertiles was reached.  THis was about on the 72-73 line.  More footprintes were visible in these tiles too but there was also bad burn and root damage.  Plaster was found over these tiles.  The burn area previously discussed that was found right over the floor seems to be in the area to the east of the burned tiles.  Immediately to the south were unfired tiles that were not burned and the floor had no heavy burn layer.  About half a box of pottery was mostly unburned fineware.

In Beta-Gamma/57-58 the area was cleaned to the floor which appeared very rough and not very well preserved, particularly in gamma.  Some damage may have been done to the floor while removing the stump in beta/57 but htis area seemed to be much better preserved as a rule.

The rabbit heads were excavated from N/84 along with sima and statue fragments.  A fifth full head (minus cheek fragments) was found in N/84 but slightly worn.

A new cut in RST was begun with statue fragments immediately coming up.  There wasn't much soil in this area due to erosion.  Many stumps and roots were present ant lots of tile and plaster (3 c.).

In beta-gamma/57-58 clearing to one foot was finished with all tile lifted.  The floor was not well preserved in this area.  A large flat-topped pieces of plaster was found in the south-west corner of gamma/57.
