Daily Log

We are continuing to clear the trench of backfill and expose the soil uncovered yesterday.  This process is slow because when the area was backfilled no plastic was laid down.  While troweling, a piece of bronze was uncovered (find #1).  We are defining the rocks in feature A which are being found in the southern part of the trench.

Because little pottery and tile have been found in removing locus 1 it has been decided to complete a shallow pick pass over the southern section of feature A.  Soil was troweled into a bucket and sorted.  Another shallow pick pass was completed.  While, sorting the soil a new dark brown soil with pieces of terracotta was uncovered.  It was decided to scrape the soil to remove locus 1 and to fully reveal the new soil.  The sloping northeast corner of the southern section of feature A was excavated using a hand pick and then sifting the dirt into buckets.  We have uncovered more of the tarp on the eastern edge of feature A.  The tarp seems to continue down possibly protecting the eastern side of feature A.  We will continue to explore its extent.

Editorial Note

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
