Section B

A 2.5 meter ct was taken on the southern part of this section to allow more working room when following the eastern NS wall. The fill was removed to just above the tile layer.

The tile layer was lifted on the long NS 1 1/2m wide cut on the western side of this section. Tiles were heavy, sometimes 20cm deep - 10 boxes dumped. Also found:

1. frags of procession frieze - about 1 1/2 - 2m from southern EW crosswall

2. ridgepole tile frags

3. pottery in addition to the usual coarse ware & impasto: several pieces of imported orange fabric glazed black & slipped white with design of bands & dots - about 1 1/2m from sn EW wall; greenish fabric frags including rim (Ionic bowl?) with band at edge of rim - 5m from N trench edge

several oddly shaped pieces.

After tiles were lifted, it was noticed that the pavement level rose from west to east. There were also scattered traces of burning charcoal deposits along the length, with a fairly even concentration at the southern end.

Editorial Note

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
