Elevations were taken of locus 13 this morning.

Starting for the day co-ordinate elevations for locus 13 :

NW(84-E/47-S): 25.83 m. above absolute elevation (80 cm. below datum point)

NE(85-E/47-S): 25.78 m. above absolute elevation (85 cm. below datum point)

SE(85-E/50-S): 25.59 m. above absolute elevation (104 cm. below datum point)

SW-1(83-E/50-S): 25.64 m. above absolute elevation (99 cm. below datum point)

SW-2(83-E/49-S): 25.64 m. above absolute elevation (99 cm. below datum point)

SW-3(84-E/49-S): 25.68 m. above absolute elevation (95 cm. below datum point)

Excavation continued in locus 13 this morning.  A pick-pass was conducted in the southern half of the locus.  Then a pick-pass was carried out throughout the entire locus.  Then some picking was conducted in the southern half to finish the excavation of this locus.  Approximately 1/2 bowl of small terracotta fragments was recovered.  Approximately 1/4 latte-box of

pottery sherds was found, plus a sizeable piece of coarse ware.  Two special finds were made.

The area directly under locus 13 was now declared locus 14 .  Elevations and photos were taken.

Opening co-ordinate elevations for locus 14 :

NW(84-E/47-S): 25.79 m. above absolute elevation (84 cm. below datum point)

NE(85-E/47-S): 25.78 m. above absolute elevation (85 cm. below datum point)

SE(85-E/50-S): 25.53 m. above absolute elevation (110 cm. below datum point)

SW-1(83-E/50-S): 25.59 m. above absolute elevation (104 cm. below datum point)

SW-2(83-E/49-S): 25.63 m. above absolute elevation (100 cm. below datum point)

SW-3(84-E/49-S): 25.63 m. above absolute elevation (100 cm. below datum point)

The soil of locus 14 is of a lighter olive-brown color than that of the previous locus.

Special Finds:

#1. Locus 13 84.2-E/49.6-S 25.65 m. above absolute elevation (98 cm. below datum point) Plaster chunk

#2. Locus 13 84.8-E/49.7-S 25.54 m. above absolute elevation (109 cm. below datum point) Slag

Excavation was begun in locus 14 with light picking to avoid pulling up small stones.

No continuation of the fist-size and smaller stone scatter found in locus 10 was found in locus 14 ( locus 10 and 14 represent the same stratigraphic layer).  End of day elevations were taken for locus 14 .

End of day co-ordinate elevations for locus 14 :

NW(84-E/47-S): 25.74 m. above absolute elevation (89 cm. below datum point)

NE(85-E/47-S): 25.75 m. above absolute elevation (88 cm. below datum point)

SE(85-E/50-S): 25.53 m. above absolute elevation (110 cm. below datum point)

SW-1(83-E/50-S): 25.59 m. above absolute elevation (104 cm. below datum point)

SW-2(83-E/49-S): 25.60 m. above absolute elevation (103 cm. below datum point)

SW-3(84-E/49-S): 25.60 m. above absolute elevation (103 cm. below datum point)

Approximately 1/4 bowl of small terracotta fragments was recovered.  Fourteen sherds of pottery were found along with two pieces of bone (one of which was made a special find).

Special Finds (cont.):

#3. Locus 14 84-85-E/48-49-S Approximately 25.60 m. above absolute elevation Burnt bone

Balk-wall cleaning was carried out in the southeast conrner of the trench.  A few tiny fragments of terracotta were recovered.  Four sherds of pottery and one piece of bone were found.
