DAILY LOG ENTRY FOR MONDAY, 13 JULY 2009

MORNING:

Continued trimming baulk walls. Trimming baulks and trowelling the soil near the rock sticking out of the E baulk has revealed some additional large (more than 10 cm across) fragments of terracotta. While trimming in the NE corner, a piece of plaster with reed impressions was recovered. The NE corner was trowelled down to bring that corner of the trench level w/ the rest of the floor. Roots were trimmed in preparation for declaring new loci. The concentration of rocks in the hard packed soil the NW corner, the rocks of the circular rock feature, & the soil inside of the circular rock feature will all be new loci. The concentration of rocks will be Locus 7 , the circular rock feature will be Locus 8 , & the soil inside of the circular rock feature will be Locus 9 . Took points & elevations & opening photos. The soil in Locus 7 & 9 was also Munselled.

AFTERNOON:

Trowelled in Locus 7 . Soil is a yellowish-olive brown in color w/ lots of rocks. Most are a medium-small (child's fist) in size, w/ a few that are smaller (3-4 cm across) and one that is considerably larger (ca 10 cm x 20 cm in size). Most of the rocks are gray and have pointy and sharp edges, although some are more rounded. A couple of the rocks are very chalky in texture and can be trowelled through. These are yellow inside. There was a fragment of tile (ca 6 cm long) just under the surface of Locus 7 . There have been a few other fragments of terracotta, a tondo fragment, & a piece of ridged ceramic. (Find #2).

Continued to trowel in Locus 7 . Almost all of the small rocks have been removed from the locus. The large rock in the center of the locus was trowelled around and remove. The soil is a brownish olive & feels moist than it did this morning, but that may be because the surface was baked over Friday, Saturday, & Sunday.

Some fragments of charcoal, (pea sized) were also found in Locus 7 as was more of that whitish yellow chalky soil which seems to be decayed limestone.
