In previous seasons, excavations were conducted in the Civitate A (CA) area. These excavations had revealed evidence of kilns (see trench books JB I & JB III ), Iron age activity in the form of coilmade pottery and bronzes (see trench books CA 37 , CA 36 , & TT IV ), and the presence of a well (see trench books JBB II & MG II) . The presence of Iron Age pottery and bronzes found within capped midden pits, a well, and the kilns within the vicinity of Civitate A might suggest further occupation and human activity in the immediate vicinity. To further explore the possibilities of occupation, Trench CA-47 was established.

The goals for the exploratory trench CA-47 are to explore possibilities of habitation or occupation in the area of Civitate A and prehaps industry. Exploratory trenches CA 43 - CA 47 were also established nearby in hopes of clarifying similar questions concerning human activity for the 2000 seasons (see trench books ACL I , PN I , MCC I , and SJG I ).

Editorial Note

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
