Pottery Summary

Although most of the pottery fragments recovered from T34 during the 2003 season were badly worn, the distribution of types and volume of material visible in the 4 designated loci helped confirm the understanding of both the stratigraphic sequence of the trench and its relationship to other Tesoro trenches. The charts on the following pages, which illustrate this distribution graphically, demonstrate that Loci 3 and 4 were rich in archaic material, though only Locus 4 yielded large, well-preserved portions of vessels. This fact strengthens the hypothesis that Locus 4 represents a surface functional during the archaic period which was covered in debris associated with the destruction of this phase of the site. Furthermore, the constantly increasing number and quality of pottery recovered during the 2003 season reconfirms that T34 is deserving of further excavation.

The small amount of pottery recovered from Locus 1 was generally medieval or later; this material is included in the category \x93other\x94 for purposes of summary. The quantity of material recovered from Locus 2 was dramatically greater, though pieces were generally badly worn. Locus 3 yielded the first significant numbers of pottery, though the best-preserved finds were all recovered from Locus 4. Considering both that Locus 4 is still open and that no orientalizing layers have been uncovered, further excavation should reveal an even more extensive pottery record and consequently more information about the area.

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
