Locus 3 open over the entire area of the trench. Because the scraped down surface of Locus 3 is rather hilly, leveling done over the entire area of the trench starting in the north and moving south. Locus 3 soil is a light brown with white and orange included flecks. Soil sorted and cleaned from the trench. In sorting, found piece of pottery, potentially slipped.

Because of the discovery of artifacts, we have returned to pick passing in order to determine whether there are more artifacts in the soil at this level. Pick pass done in the north eastern corner of the trench, soil consistent with Locus 3 heavily included with terra cotta flecks and white flecks. Pottery also found in cleaning. The rest of the northern meter pick axed. Soil sorted and cleaned from the trench, consistent with Locus 3 . No material found.

Second pick pass done in the second meter by four meter area from the northern wall. Picking also done around roots and stump in the northeastern corner. Soil sorted and cleaned from the trench, remains consistent with Locus 3 soil, mottled with flecks of terra cotta (orange), white, and now also carbon. Pottery found in cleaning. Several roots removed from the stump in the northeastern corner. Stump near the center of the second meter by four meter area removed. Third meter by four meters from the northern wall pick axed. Soil sorted and cleaned from the trench, consistent with Locus 3 , mottled with white, orange, and carbon flecks which are darkening the light brown soil in areas. Pick pass done in the southern most meter by four meter area of the trench. Soil consistent with Locus 3 , sorted and cleaned from the trench. No artifacts recovered. Returned to pick passing over the northern most meter by four meter area. Soil sorted and cleaned, consistent with Locus 3 . Especial attention paid to clearing our soil around the tree stump in the northeastern corner. No materials recovered. Pick pass done over the second meter by four meter area from

the northern wall, as well as around the stump in the northeastern corner. Soil sorted and cleaned from the trench, remaining consistent with Locus 3 , heavily mottled light brown soil. Terra cotta and pottery found during cleaning. Pick pass done in the third meter by four meter strip from the northern wall. Soil consistent with Locus 3 , sorted and cleaned from the trench. Some pottery found while cleaning as well as terra cotta. Also in this meter there are many small stones, 3-5cm long being removed with the soil. Areas around the stumps in the northern wall, northeastern corner, and southwestern corner cleaned in order to expose their roots more, soil sorted and cleaned from the trench.

The southern most meter by four meter area pick axed. Soil consistent with Locus 3 soil, sorted and cleaned from the trench. Some pottery and terra cotta found. Another pick pass commenced in the northern most meter by four meter area, especially around

the stump in the northeastern corner. Soil consistent with Locus 3 , sorted and cleaned from the trench. Pottery found during cleaning. Pick axing done across the second meter by four meter strip from the north. Soil consistent with Locus 3 , sorted and cleaned from the trench. No artifacts found. Pick pass done in the southern two meters of the trench. Soil consistent with Locus 3 , sorted and cleaned from the trench. Some pottery found in cleaning, as well as several 5-7cm long pieces of terra cotta. Stump in the northeastern corner removed. Pick pass done in the northern meter by four meter area, including through area where stump was previously. Sorted and cleaned from the trench, consistent with Locus 3 . Several pieces of terra cotta found during cleaning. Leveling done to take down the small wall forming between CB 52 and CB 53. Several small terra cotta fragments found. Roots clipped. Baulk walling done along the northern wall, no material recovered. End of Day Elevations taken:
