Daily Log Entry for Wednesday, 01 August 2007

WEDNESDAY, 01 AUGUST 2007

AM

Work continued in Locus 14 (the channel) and in Locus 5.  We made several light pick passes and trowelled out and sorted the dirt after each one.  Several more rocks on the north edge of the channel were defined including a large piece of bedrock that seems to form the northern boundary of the channel.  After about the third pick pass it became apparent that the soil in the eastern portion of the channel was different from the rest.  From the western boundary of the trench to about 1 meter W of the east boundary, the soil is chalkier and a light brown.  The soil in the east is much darker and contains some mottling.  It is also much more clay-like.  After morning break, we declared Locus 17 and Locus 18.  Locus 17 is the dark mottled clay in the east and Locus 18 is the lighter chalkier soil in the western & central portion of the channel.

Elevations were only taken at the bottom of the channel, since that is the only part of T-45, except for Locus 5, that has changed since the declaration of Locus 14 yesterday.  Point C marks where Locus 17 ends & Locus 18 begins.  Work also continued throughout the morning in Locus 5, which continues to produce few finds and is light brown.

PM

Work continued in the channel and in Locus 5.  Right after lunch we noticed a change in Locus 18, the soil became sandier and finer and may be the silt at the bottom of the channel, but no corresponding change occured in Locus 17.  No changes also occured in Locus 5, which is still a light brown clayey soil.  We trimmed the baulk walls in preparation for closing photos and took closing points and elevations.
