Introduction

Introduction

Tesoro Trench 37 (T-37) will be located south of the Archaic (Upper) Building and adjacent to the western wall of T-21.  Previous excavations in the area include T-34 (PJC I, 2003) and T-21 (FA I, 1978-1979; AG I, 1993; MG I, 1997; and ACL II, 2000).

T-37 will be divided into three separate trenches across the coordinates (144 E / 52 S), (148 E / 52 S), (148 E / 60 S), and (144 E / 60 S).  These coordinates follow the master grid system (TT I, 1991).  The trenches will be separated by one meter each between their north and south walls.

The section of T-37 recorded in this book will be named T-37A and will be the southern-most trench in the area.  T-37A will have the following coordinates: (144 E / 58 S), (148 E / 58 S), (148 E / 60 S), and (144 E / 60 S).  The trench will conjoin with the western wall of T-21, so only three walls will be exposed during excavation.

The goals for T-37A in the 2004 season are:

1) To contribute to the understanding of the stratigraphy of the Tesoro area south of the Archaic (Upper) Building.

2) To investigate possible Archaic architectural features and destruction deposits.

3) To further define the topography of the Orientalizing period.

The datum point for T-37A has an absolute elevation of 28.65 m.  Pottery will be collected in latte boxes (approx. 16 cm x 9 cm x 5 cm) and bulk terracotta will be measured in bowls (or cassette) (volume = 2959.12 cm sq.).

Editorial Note

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
