Daily Log

July 12, 1988

The trench and the areas of tile and oithoi were photographed. The morning was spend lifting the tiles, pithos and plaster fragments. The larger rocks were left in situ.

R-P 65:

Several pithos fragments were fund underneath those already visible. Right below the large rim (see p.53) in P 65 several large joining fragments of a pithos base was found. App 3 cassetta of pithos fragments were removed from this area and brought down to the magazzino (find #2). It is possible that they are part of the same pithos. 2 cassetta of tile, a few pottery fragments and several plaster fragments were removed.

R-P 67:

The tiles in the row of rocks and tile (see p.69) were lifted. Right below the large pantile (upside down) in P-Q 67 a large fragment of a covertile

with a complete width (right (right side up) was found (find #1). 2 cassetta of tile were lifted and a few fragments of pottery were found.

R-P 69:

In this area mostlu small fragments of pantile, a few larger fragments of covertile, and pithos fragments, including a lip fragment (find #3) turned up. 1 1/2 cassetta of tile, 1 cassetta of plaster, 1 1/2 cassetta of pithos turned up.

P-R 70:

This line of tiles consisted mostly of pantile fragments with a few larger fragments of covertile. Several pithos fragments were found (including a large lip - larger than find #4 found in P65). 1 1/2 cassetta of tile and 1 cassetta of pithos fragments were lifted. A few fragments of pottery were found.

  • Find #5
  • P 67
  • depth 0.70m
  • plaster layer
  • flat terracotta object - raking sima frag.

The fourth cut ( depth 0.80m) was started. P-R 71 was completed. The nature of the soil is still the same: plasterlayer with fragments of burnt wood and occassionally burnt tile. 1 cassetta of tile (mostly small fragments of pan tile), 1 cassetta of plaster and 2 1/2 box of mixed pottery and a few fragments of bone. P-R 68, P 67 and part of Q 67 was excavated. A few large

fragments of pan tile were found under the line of tile and rocks in P-R 67 ( a few more large rocks also appeared). Most of the rocks in this line (left in situ this morning) were removed since they were resting on soil.

2/3 cassetta of tile, 1 cassetta of  plaster and box of mixed pottery and a few fragments of bone were found.
