Daily Log 20/7/12

20/7/2012

AM Log:

The trench was prepared for opening photos for Locus 3 by trimming baulk walls, leveling the ridge between CB 60 and CB 57, clipping roots and scraping the entire trench for loose dirt. Locus 3 is characterized by a darker brown, more clay-like soil, which is found across the entire trench. Locus 3 will be defined by coordinates for the entire trench:

50 E, 57 S

50E, 59 S

54 E, 57 S

54 E, 59 S

The opening elevations for Locus 3 are as follows:

NW: 25.05 mAE

NE: 25.03 mAE

SE: 24.96 mAE

SW: 25.05 mAE

Photos were taken from north and from the east. A pick pass was done across the entire trench. Slightly worn terracotta and pieces of pottery were recovered.

Supplemental Find #1

Bronze Fragment

Locus 3

A second and third pick pass was done across the entire trench. During the 3 rd pick pass a soil change was noticed from the dark clay-ish brown to a lighter sandier soil. The 3 rd pick pass also turned up several small rocks about 5cm in length across the entire trench. In order to see the soil change better the baulk walls were trimmed, roots clipped, trench scraped and the ridge between CB 57 and CB 60 leveled.

PM Log:

Trench was prepared for photos with baulk trimming, scraping, leveling the ridge between CB 60 and CB 59 and defining the stump in the southern baulk. Locus 3 is being closed due to a shift in the soil from the dark brown clay-ish to a sandier, lighter brown soil. Locus 4 will be opened across the entire trench

The coordinates for Locus 4 correspond to the coordinates for all of CB 60. Closing elevations are as follows:

NW: 25.00 mAE

NE: 24.97 mAE

SE: 24.92 mAE

SW: 24.91 mAE

Opening photos were taken from the north and from the east. An entire pick pass was done across the trench. After discussions with the director and because of the ovoid feature in CB 57 at the same level as our current level, sorting was done in the trench with trowels, instead of at the wheelbarrow. The terracotta and tile was not significantly different than that in Locus 3 .

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
